Weekly Highlights
Last month I stated that this was going to be a busy year for Song Surgeon.  We are in the process of building and developing new products and services that should make Song Surgeon your one-stop shop for audio key and tempo change needs.  To be specific, when we are done, we will have the following products and services to offer:

  • Our desktop products Song Surgeon Standard and Pro (both Mac and Windows)
  • A new version called Song Surgeon Trainer, that will be an entry level product (both Mac and Windows)
  • A mobile app version of Song Surgeon for Apple (iOS) and Google (android) devices.
  • A FREE (DIY) Online Key and Tempo changes service
  • A $7 custom Key and Tempo change service (we do the work for you)
  • PLUS we will soon be kicking off the development of Song Surgeon Version 5.

It should be an exciting year. Stay tuned.

SONG SURGEON VERSION 5 UPDATE

Here is a brief update on the status of version 5:

  • We have identified, tested and successfully licensed a technology that will allow us to incorporate BPM detection into the new build.
  • We have identified, tested, and are in the final stages of negotiating a license that will allow us to use a Chord detection system in Version 5.

This is great news because these are two of the major components we were planning to add to Version 5 – pending finding appropriate technology and licensing it. Now that we have them nailed down these two features should be a certainty for Version 5. Although work has not yet begun we hope to kickoff the development of Version 5, in the 2nd quarter of this year.

SONG SURGEON MOBILE APP

Development is underway for our Mobile App. This will be a two step process. First we’ll complete work on the Android build.  Once this is done, we’ll begin working on the iOS (Apple) version.

This app will basic key and tempo change functions. It will not have all of the bells and whistles found on the desktop version.  Though not definitive, we are leaning toward providing this app for No cost.  We’ll certainly keep you posted of our progress.

DOWNLOAD SURGEON – NOW AVAILABLE!

I have mentioned Download Surgeon over the past several months in this newsletter.  It is NOW available.  DS is an tri-module A/V Downloader.

This product is similar to the download module found in Song Surgeon Pro, though with some changes and improvements.  If you own Pro, you will need determine whether the modest enhancements found in this product are worth the
extra dollars. That is a decision for you to make, not us.

However, if you have a Standard version of Song Surgeon or have been a demo user – and you are looking for a way to download audio and/or video from YouTube, SoundCloud, Reverbnation, and thousands of other sites, then I encourage you to give this a look.

During this launch period, we are offering a 50% discount off the normal price of $39.95. That means you can grab Download Surgeon right now for $19.95.  Here is the link to the ordering page:

http://downloadsurgeon.com/shopping/

Please note  that your purchase entitles you to install on only one machine, not three as we do with Song Surgeon. Download Surgeon runs on both Windows and Mac (OSx) machines.

Like all of our products, Download Surgeon comes with one full year of support – and is also backed by our no-hassles guarantee policy.   If for any reason during the first 90 days, you are not satisfied, contact us and we’ll refund 100% of your purchase, no questions asked.

SONG SURGEON TRAINER

This desktop app is under development right now. Song Surgeon Trainer be our entry level desktop product.  It will have the ability to change key and tempo and will allow the creation of a looping area. However, it will not be able to save changes. And it doesn’t have any of the other functions found in Standard or Pro.

Song Surgeon Trainer will be similar to Tascam’s Voice, Guitar and Bass trainer products, but it will be much less expensive and will be able open most audio file formats, unlike the Tascam units which restrict access to only a few file types.

To the right is a preliminary snapshot of what the app will look like.

We anticipate this entry level product being used primarily for practice purposes, due to the fact that changes cannot be saved and that it doesn’t use the HQ algorithms found in the Standard and Pro models.  If you don’t currently own a version of Song Surgeon and are looking for something inexpensive this should be of interest. It will be available for both Mac and Windows machines.

Karaoke Users

I know we have many Karaoke users among Song Surgeon.  If you are one, I’d like to ask a favor. We are exploring the possibility of creating a product solely for Karaoke singers.  Please take a minute and respond to our survey on this potential product to help us better understand your needs and what features you would want in such a product.

I purchased Song Surgeon 3 months ago and use it primarily for keyboard learning. It sits on a dedicated laptop I bought off Ebay for about £25 and is invaluable for learning short complex passages of music.

In comparison with other solutions I have previously used for slowing down music, eg Audacity, Amazing Slow downer and the Tascam LR 10, Song Surgeon is the outright winner in terms of sound quality and ease of use and has completely replaced other solutions.  D. Beazley, UK

Weekly Highlights
We have a lot going on.  Some of it I mention in this newsletter. Other items I can’t divulge just yet.  But it’s going to be a big and exciting year for Song Surgeon.  Please take a quick read through the newsletter and you’ll see a couple of new things that are underway.

SONG SURGEON WEEKLY VIDEO TIP – Project Files, Exporting and more

This week I’d like to discuss .ssp or Song Surgoen project files. Many people use this routinely and never think twice about them – that is until that move these files from an old machine to a new machine and try to use them.  As part of this discussion we also cover Song Surgeon portable project files – something new in Version 4 that you may not realize you have.

SONG SURGEON MOBILE APP

I know, I know… it may be hard for you to believe…. but after many years of discussing this we are finally go to build apps for Song Surgeon-  both iOS (apple) and android.  The Song Surgeon App will contain very basic functionality when contrasted with the desktop version. Essentially it will allow you to open a file, change key, change tempo and set up a single loop.  That’s it.  Price-wise we haven’t made any final decision but it is likely to be free or at most $.99.

We’ll keep you posted as things progress.  It’s too early to tell you WHEN to expect it, but in a couple of weeks I should know more.  Stay tuned!

DOWNLOAD SURGEON – Coming soon!

Beta testing for this product will be completed within a week.  That means by the end of the month we should be launching this new product.

Download Surgeon is a spin-off of the sniffer technology found in Song Surgeon with some changes and improvements.  This new product utilizes 3 separate download options.  Two of these are the same as the two found in Song Surgeon Pro.  The third is a new module that initially will download from 9 or 10 specific sites such as Sound Cloud, Reverbnation and Facebook to name a few. New sites will be added to this third download module periodically.

If you are interested in this new product, which should be available in the first quarter of next year, please click the link below and sign up for the launch list.

If you already own Song Surgeon Pro, Download Surgeon will largely be redundant.  However if you own Standard or haven’t yet purchases Song Surgeon, but are  looking for a way to download audio/video this should definitely be of interest.

SONG SURGEON CUSTOM KEY AND TEMPO CHANGE SERVICE

Custom Key and Tempo Change Service (only $7) is now here!  Over the years I have had people contact me and ask about the possibility of sending us files, and having our audio experts perform the key and tempo change on their files.  Finally after many years I have decided to implement such a service and it is now available.  Here is a link to that page.

SlideTrax Product Input

SlideTrax is new product that we launched last year.  Its target is musicians who want to easily upload their music to YouTube.  As you may now, YT doesn’t allow audio on the site, so music or audio must be converted to video before it can be uploaded. We are looking for input from musicians to refine and improve this product. We’d appreciate 1-2 minutes of your time to complete a brief survey.

I’m a chromatic harmonica player and Song Surgeon is brilliant. I particularly like the feature that allows you to slow down a piece of music that is difficult to learn. Also the “Loop” feature allows me to hear the same “hard to learn” sections over and over until I have mastered it.  Song Surgeon is absolutely amazing!

Weekly Highlights
A belated Happy New Year to everyone.  I am really excited about this new year. We have a lot going on with Song Surgeon as well as many of our other products. Thank you for your patronage in the past and I look forward to again serving you in 2015.

SONG SURGEON WEEKLY VIDEO TIP – Saving SS Changes

In reviewing the Help Desk over the past week, I see a number of tickets related to saving changes. In SS there are two ways to do this. One is to save as a Project File (.ssp). The second is to export and create a new audio file.  This training video discusses and shows you how to do this.

SONG SURGEON VERSION 5 – Frequency Analysis and Beat Detection

We are still working on getting all of the pieces in place for version 5.  There are two outstanding things we are tracking down. One is chord or note detection.  The second is automatic beat detection.  Once we have finished our evaluation of these technologies we’ll be able begin the actual development and work on the new version.

We expect to begin the development of this new version in the first quarter of this year, with a goal of completing it before the end of 2015.

Thank you for the demo of differences of Pro vs Regular Song Surgeon.  I appreciate it, AND I have another request that I hope you will entertain and develop, that is produce a similar kind of demo for those of us who’s instrument is VOICE.  i.e. How I can optimize my use of the differences between Pro & Regular SS in learning new songs or adapting them to my singing style, shorten, add loops, etc.

Also, thank you again for helping me figure out and fix the problem I had with my computer not functioning properly.  You may recall that I had a friend come over fix my i MAC computer (taking off malware, etc.), which turned out to be my problem, not the SS app.

Again, thank you.  Your thoughtfulness in helping your customers make the best use of your program is impressive.

Sincerely, W. Fry

Weekly Highlights
Wow, we are loaded for bear in this newsletter.  In addition to the normal stuff, we have more information on Download Surgeon – new product that will be introduced early next year.  We are also introducing a $7 custom key and tempo service, and there is a brief update on Version 5.  Lastly we are continuing some of great Black Friday / Cyber Monday Specials.  Read on for all the details.

SONG SURGEON WEEKLY VIDEO TIP – Re-downloading SS

As many of you know we implemented a new Help Desk a couple of months back. One of the nice things it allows me to do, is to easily see what issue(s) are the most common ones.  To my surprise that issue turns out to be something very basic: How to download and reinstall Song Surgeon.  The video below walks you through the steps of not only how to download but also how to deactivate an old machine to free up one of your 3 slots if that is necessary.

http://youtu.be/aanYR60FdI0

SONG SURGEON VERSION 5 – Chord Finder or Frequency Analysis

We have completed an evaluation of the frequency analysis technologies available.  This is the technology that can determine a note or a chord with some degree of accuracy. Among the candidates we have identified one that has stood out; it has much greater accuracy than the others.  We are currently in discussions with this university to license the technology so we can include it in Song Surgeon Version 5.

We expect to begin the development of this new version in the first quarter of next year, with a goal of completing it before the end of 2015.

DOWNLOAD SURGEON – Coming in January

By the time you are reading this I hope to have a beta version of this product on my desk.  Download Surgeon is a spin off of the sniffer technology found in Song Surgeon with some changes and improvements.  This new product utilizes 3 separate download options.  Two of these are the same as the two found in Song Surgeon Pro.  The third is a new module that initially will download from 9 or 10 specific sites – such as Soundcloud, Reverbnation and 8tracks(internet radio station), and Face Book to name a few. New sites will be added to this 3rd download module periodically.

Thank you very much for the above attached file and all your previous e-mails with attached revised files.  The Jingle Bell Rock reduction has worked well, as you say. The original was not a very clear version anyway, so the result is excellent in those circumstances. I have had a brief listen to all the other revised files and they sound fine, thank you. If I may, I will have a thorough listen tomorrow to check them, as you recommended.

Thank you so much for giving such priority to my work. It is very much appreciated. The glowing testimonials about your company’s superb service and products are indeed well deserved.

Weekly Highlights
We have been working on a new product that is an offshoot of the sniffer module found in Song Surgeon Pro.  It will be called Download Surgeon.   If you already own the Pro version, the additional functionality found in this new product will be modest. If you own the Std version however or don’t yet own Song Surgeon at all, this new product may be of interest.

The product will run on both Mac and Windows systems.  It will feature 3 download modules, and it should be available sometime within the next 3 months.  It will do everything that the current Sniffer Module does in the Pro version but it will have a 3rd download module that will allow you to access about 200 additional sites.

We are currently building a notification page where you can add your name to the list to be notified of its availability when it is released.   I have provided the link below, but it is possible this page won’t yet be active when you get your email.  If if it not, please try a day later at which time it should be.

SONG SURGEON WEEKLY VIDEO TIP

This weekly video tip is brief.  It demonstrates how you can customize the font sizes used in the markers and loops of Song Surgeon.  This especially helpful if you are older and have begun using reading glasses.

SONG SURGEON VERSION 5

We have reviewed the results of the survey that you completed for us on suggestions for Version 5.   What is found below is a list of the modifications and major features additions we intent to add.   There will be many, many other smaller changes additions made as well.

  • The addition of some kind of spectrum analysis to determine chords and/or notes of a file that is opened in Song Surgeon.
  • The addition of beat detection to determine the speed or BPM of a song or file
  • The addition of a metronome feature  that will allow you to select any speed and hear the metronome either while nothing is playing (only the metronome sound) or while a song is loaded and playing.
  • Improvement of the Music Pad feature currently found in the Pro version.

Please note that this a list of proposed new features based upon and possible changes.  In the final analysis the actual features incorporated into this new version will be determined by technical feasibility, balancing this with the associated costs.  As of today, there is no set date for this anticipated new version.  We hope to begin work on it sometime in the first quarter of 2015.

Weekly Highlights
We have several things going on that I would like to briefly review.   The first is in regard to Version 5.  We have begun to explore the technology required for doing frequency analysis for songs that are played within Song Surgeon.  This was the most highly requested new feature from our customer survey and one that we are planning on implementing.

We also have completed the implementation of a GIFT checkout process.   If you are beginning to think about the holidays and giving Song Surgeon as a gift, we now have convenient way to do this on the shopping cart.

Lastly, we are implementing some new pages on the site which will allow us to offer a Custom Key and Tempo change service.  This service is something that has been requested over the years and it should soon be available.  We this service, you send us the file you need changed, and our audio experts will do this for you.   Stay tuned.  We’ll let you know when it is available.

SONG SURGEON WEEKLY VIDEO TIP

We have seen a couple of recent inquiries at the Help Desk about the unnatural vocal characteristics that are heard with key change in vocals, something called the chipmunk or munchkin affect.  Version 4 Pro has a feature called formant preservation which eliminates this. Watch the video below for more complete explanation.

SONG SURGEON vs. AMAZING SLOW DOWNER VIDEO

Amazing Slow Downer by Roni Music was one of the first software programs available to slow down music.  It was a good product at the time, but there have been few modifications since it was first released and it hasn’t kept up with the times.  One of our customers put this video together which shows a comparison between the two products.

I am a guitarist, based in the U.K. A lot of my time is spent entertaining in residential homes. Many of the residents have varying degrees of memory loss and enjoy hugely listening to songs from their younger years – for most this means the fifties and sixties, but from even earlier decades for some.

I make use of backing tracks to add an authentic flavour to some of the songs and play along with these. However, I find that some tracks I purchase are not quite what I want, i.e.

a. some tracks are not accurately tuned and S.S. enables me to fine-tune the pitch until it’s spot-on

b. some songs are simply recorded too fast for older people to cope with but S.S. enables me to adjust the tempo to what I want

c. the ‘sniffer’ mode is brilliant in enabling me to download a version of any unfamiliar song and so I can learn the melody. This saves me buying endless recordings and I always delete the download as soon as I have grasped the melody. I am pretty adept at working out the chord structures but some of the earlier songs (1930’s and 1940’s especially) are quite musically complex and the facility to play and re-play recordings or specific sections is invaluable.

Many thanks for a great product!

This week we are in the process of migrating to a new version of the Help Desk. You may experience delayed response times to Support Tickets, as well as the temporary interruption of the use of the knowledge base as we transfer everything to this new system. If you have used the our Help Desk before your account has been transferred but please note… you may need to reset your password before you can log in, by clicking the Password reset link at the bottom of the log-in form on the new Help Desk page. The old Help Desk is almost 10 years old.  Due to growing problems with keeping this old system running we finally decided to upgrade. Like anything new there will be a learning curve, however it should be small as we have migrating to a new system provided by the same company – and it should look, feel, and work very similar to the old system.

The old Help Desk will automatically redirect to the new one, however we also encourage you to bookmark the address of the new Help Desk.  It is: http://tmj-software.kayako.com/

Thanks for your help. All is now OK. I am considering your advice regarding version 4, but at 70 years old and on a pension, money is not as available as it used to be. Also I am not sure that I will get to use the new features, especially as I have version 2 of Video Surgeon. Thanks again for the trouble you have taken on my behalf. I must add that I have been very pleasantly impressed with the attitude, quality and promptness of your support over the last nearly six years on the very few occasions that I have needed help with your software.
